Tips from the public led Lee County sheriff’s deputies to a man who they say punched a 7-Eleven employee in the face in an attempt to steal her rent money on Thursday morning.
Wesley R. Runyon, 27, of Fort Myers, was arrested at home around 7 p.m. on a robbery charge.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 4:00 a.m. the victim was ending her shift at the 7-Eleven located at 11700 South Cleveland Avenue in Fort Myers. She decided to withdraw money from the ATM located inside the store.
While at the machine, she was approached by a man who asked her for some money, stating he needed help because he couldn’t pay his rent, reports said. The woman denied his request.
He made another attempt, this time asking to sell her something in exchange for the cash. Again, she refused.
The man then stuck her in the face and grabbed her hand trying to steal her money. The victim fought back and was able to hang on to her cash, although her debit card was damaged during the struggle. The man then fled through the front door of the store. The victim’s son chased after him.
The victim says that she withdrew the money to pay her rent.
A tip to Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers lead detectives to Runyon, whom the victim identified as her attacker. At the time of his arrest, the clothing Runyon was wearing matched the clothing the attacker wore in a security video.
