One of the men most instrumental in establishing and growing the city of Marco Island died Wednesday morning.
Kjell Will Pettersen, 84, served as chairman on the first city council from 1997, which was the year the city incorporated, until 2002.
Pettersen died at an assisted living facility in Naples at about 8:30 a.m., his grandson James Nesmith said.
Pettersen will be remembered most for his civic involvement on Marco Island, Nesmith said.
Pettersen is survived by his five children: Tom Pettersen, Maureen Pettersen, Kevin Pettersen, Maryann Nesmith and Kathleen Bari.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
