8300 Collier Boulevard, Naples, FL

— The Collier County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 78-year-old East Naples man who authorities say shot himself inside a Physicians Regional — Collier Boulevard hospital restroom on Thursday.

Deputies were called to the hospital just before 5:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a gunshot, according to a report. They determined that Eugene Martin shot himself in a patient restroom while visiting his wife in the hospice wing of the hospital.

“This evening, the spouse of a terminally-ill patient at our hospital took his own life with a single gunshot while in a private patient bathroom located in his wife’s room,” hospital spokeswoman Taylor Hamilton said in a prepared statement. “At no time did this individual pose a threat or danger to any other patients, their families or caregivers at our hospital. We are deeply saddened for this family’s loss and they remain in our thoughts and prayers at this time.”

A Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said she wasn’t aware of any road closures or evacuations as a result of the shooting.
