MARCO ISLAND — As December continues to wind down, Marco Islanders continue their celebration of the holidays at Christmas Island Style events and gatherings. This weekend is no exception as islanders prepare for a holiday movie, a remembrance of a local icon, a street parade and a celebration at the oldest church on Marco.
This Friday night Christmas Island Style will be hosting a Christmas Movie by the Tree; this event will be held at the community Christmas tree located at the Veterans Community Park at 6 p.m. Bring your chairs, blankets and dress warm as we prepare for a great family movie night at the park featuring a holiday movie all ages will enjoy. Beach Dogs, the island’s popular hot dog vendor will be on hand with delicious hot dogs, chips and drinks, all for at a nominal cost; proceeds will go to help defray the cost of the free movie. Come on out and enjoy the family evening.
Starting at 11 a.m., Saturday, a tribute will be held for the late Marion Blomeier at the Old Marco Inn on Palm Street. Marion and her husband acquired the inn during the late 1960s and it quickly became a popular gathering spot for Islanders and she was instrumental in creating a festive Christmas spirit within and outside the Old Marco Inn. A $10 admission will be charged and light refreshments and a cash bar will be provided The Marco Island Chamber of Commerce should be called for reservations at 394-7549.
Saturday night will find Islanders and visitors lining up on San Marco Road between Balfour Drive and the Barfield intersection for the 24th Annual Christmas Island Style Street Parade. Marching bands, floats, Fred Flintstone cars and motorcycles will be the norm as the 2 hour parade makes its way down San Marco Road. The parade will step off sharply at 6:30 p.m. so you should be at your favorite spot early to insure you have a great viewing area on the route. We are asking that parade participants and spectators please bring an unwrapped gift and it will be collected along the parade route by Santa’s Elves as Christmas Island Style joins with our local Kiwanis Club to help those families in need.
On Sunday evening starting at 6 p.m. the island will celebrate the wonder of the first ever church on Marco Island. This small house of worship can be found at the back of the Marco Island Cemetery, where it was moved to several years ago and renovations have restored this wonderful piece of history for all to enjoy. Come out and join us for some refreshments, carols and a review of the church and its significance to the island. Parking is available in the New Life Community Church off Elkcam Circle and the event is free to the public; dress warm and bring your lawn chairs. You can also bring an unwrapped gift to this event to help with the effort to ensure no child goes without during this holiday season.
There is no shortage of holiday activities here on Marco and you can check our schedule of events simply by going to www.christmasislandstyle.com or by calling me at 250-8348.
