I am proud to be the Mayor Elect and to have the opportunity to continue to serve the residents,
businesses, and visitors of the City of Naples. As a result of having had the pleasure of serving
as a member of the Naples City Council since February, 2004, having served on the City Planning
Advisory Board from 2001-2004, and thanks to my volunteer work with wonderful local organizations
such as the Big Cypress Basin, Naples Zoo, Naples Players, Coastal Advisory Committee and
the Tourist Development Council, I have identified four priorities for my administration:
Protect the City of Naples brand, stimulate economic development, safeguard and improve
the environment, and enact efficiencies and effectiveness.
As we have learned so well in this economic downturn, tourists and seasonal residents represent
an important cog in our economic engine. It is critical that we reinforce the "Paradise Coast"
brand and ensure Naples' quality of life as a safe, friendly and interesting area for residents
Naples is a very special place. Most of our residents and visitors could live or
visit anywhere, and they bring with them certain expectations, values and cultures to our city.
If we don't maintain our "Wow" image, they will go elsewhere.
We will continue our beach renounishment efforts; accentuate building quality for both
residential and commercial properties; work to relieve traffic congestion while making the
city walkable and bikeable; support new efforts such as the Gordon River Greenway; expand
landscaping to maintain the Tree City USA designation; and provide the highest level of essential
services, including police, fire, water, sewer, recreation, and irrigation.
In my effort to stimulate economic development, I will focus on making regulations simple and
understandable, and I will ensure they are consistently applied. We will target medical tourism
opportunities, a natural gas loop and new data processing infrastructure. It is important that we
work with hoteliers, restaurateurs and retailers to ensure residents and tourists know about the
wonderful properties and resources we have within our city limits.
To safeguard the environment, I will continue my efforts to use alternative water for irrigation,
as well as to explore alternative fuel-natural gas for government owned vehicles. We will enforcestormwater and water quality efforts to protect the Gulf of Mexico and Naples Bay, and we
will continue our efforts to construct habitat islands to provide planting areas which will
restore mangroves in the bay.
To ensure that these policies are successful, I will enact efficiencies and effectiveness throughout
the city, following my strong belief that "the least government is the best government." I
will review all departments and regulations to assess the need for them and will work to find
the best way to accomplish their purpose. I will maintain a balanced budget with a low tax rate,
while providing adequate services and maintain a high bond rating. I plan to pursue Smart City
Concepts (a program that uses technology to improve quality and reduce the costs of city services).
I will work to ensure that city employees, who work hard on our behalf toward all of these efforts,
have a sustainable pension at retirement.
I look forward to serving as your mayor for the next four years and I wish you and your family
a wonderful Holiday Season and a prosperous New Year.
