Senior softball loop standings tighten

With teams stepping up to knock off leaders, both Marco Island Senior Men’s Softball League divisions have tight races,

At the season’s midpoint Sand Bar is in first place in the Island Division, one game ahead of Cheers and Bertram’s Total Joint Centers.

In the Marco Division, Mutual of Omaha Bank has a one-game edge over CJ’s on the Bay and Joey’s Pizza.

Here are the games in order of divisional play.


Sand Bar, 19, DaVinci’s, 12

Sand Bar, behind the hitting of Jim George and opposings pitching giving up eleven walks, Sand Bar downed DaVinci’s. George had three hits, including a home run, good for five RBI. Fran Roche rattled out three hits and Jimmy Cuevas, Jack Mateja, and Ken Planck had two RBI each in the win. John DeRosa had three hits, Bill Shurina, blasted a bases-loaded homer and Steve Hummel doubled in two runs for DaVinci’s.

Bertram’s, 9, Cheers, 8

For the second time this season Bertram’s earned a one-run win over Cheers. The “New Hampshire Masher” Ed Kingsbury knocked out four hits, good for three RBI. John Barrett lined three hits and had one RBI. Doug Smith riveted four hits, with Dave Banghart and Dave Coward having three hits each for Cheers. Craig Cunningham, Denny Lello and Coward each drove in two runs.

Rookies, 11, Nacho Mama’s, 8

Doug Tuttle drove in four runs and Mike Behr three runs on three hits for Rookies. Jack O’Brien had a four-hit game, including a triple. John Cavanagh, Graydon Fuller and Vic Fondacaro laced three hits each for Nacho Mama’s. Bill James and Fondacaro had two RBI.

Sand Bar, 23, Cheers 7

In a confrontation of teams tied for first place, Sand Bar overwhelmed Cheers with a 30-hit attack, invoking the mercy rule (run differential of 15 runs between teams) after seven innings. Jim George, Tom Porter, Jimmy Cuevas, Jack Mateja and Ron Peterson each had four hits and Tom McCullough three. Mateja drove in six runs, Porter four, with Peterson and George three. Peterson and Porter slammed home runs, with Porter and Cuevas clocking triples. Ron Engels and Jim Williams had two RBI each for Cheers.

Bertram’s, 14, Rookies, 4

Pitcher Jerry Cnudde had four RBI and a home run in leading Bertram’s over Rookies. Rich Schiller launched a three-run shot, with Roger Fleming and Bill Thompson driving in two runs each. Thompson had four hits, with Herman Griffith and Mike Galatis each stroking three hits. Rookies Rich Krumholz and Pete Oellrich had three hits each and Doug Tuttle smashed a triple, knocking in two runs.

DaVinci’s, 11, Nacho Mama’s, 6

Steve Hummel had four hits, helping DaVinci’s record its second win of the season. Jim Green drove in three runs, while John DeRosa, and Ray Niemeyer had two hits each in the upset, dropping Rookies to fourth place. John Remhoff made a number of key defensive plays in the outfield, one a spectacular diving shoe-string catch to end the game. Nacho’s Grady Fuller had three hits and Bill James two RBI.


Joey’s Pizza, 8, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 7

It was confrontation between the power-pitching Jerry Garrett of the Bank and finesse pitching of Bob Zinkevicz of Joey’s. Both pitchers got roughed up in the early innings, but settled down, allowing no runs over the last three innings. Tom Whitlock had three hits, Chuck Reich two hits with two RBI and Fred Carlson cranked a solo home run for Joey’s. The Bank’s Dick DeAnna, Bob Kirsinger, Al Bozzo and Garrett had two hits each.

CJ’s on the Bay, 9, Crazy Flamingo, 5

CJ’s upped its win streak to three games. Leroy Fishleigh and Chuck Wilson punched out three hits each, with Fishleigh chalking up a triple for CJ’s. Paul Burnett had two-run home run, with Gary Schneider driving in three runs on two hits. Jim Monnier, Mel Mandel and Bill Diamond had two hits each for Crazy Flamingo.

ADKOS, 25, Islander Restaurant, 10

ADKOS continued to rip the cover off the ball, pounding out 31 hits. Joe Kruse, Mike Gardner, and Barry Bates hammered out four hits each, while Bill Dauch, Darryl Judson and Paul Vorwich each nailed three hits. Ed Kopecky, Vorwich and Gardner jacked home runs. Judson ended up with five RBI, Gardner four and Fuzz Fazekas three. Islander’s John Hedges had three RBI on two hits, including a home run, while John Gill, Dick Corley, and Jim Adams had two hits each.

CJ’s on the Bay, 13, ADKOS, 12

In an extra-inning thriller, Bob Grimm stroked a hit to right field, driving in the winning run. Dan Standard, Leroy Fishleigh, and Dan Callahan had three hits each, with all three and Paul Burnett credited with two RBI each for CJ’s. One of Burnett’s hits was a triple. Mike Gardner and Paul Vorwich each laced out four hits and collected three RBI as well as Barry Bates for ADKOS. Gardner just missed hitting for the cycle, having two singles, a triple and a home run. Bill Dauch pitched in with two RBI in the loss.

Crazy Flamingo, 19, Joey’s Pizza, 11

Crazy Flamingo upset Joey’s, with Jim Conway being the catalyst with four hits, including a home run. Bill Diamond and Bill Kayhart chased three runs each across the plate, with Tony Brock, Joe Furst and Conway having two. Joey’s Jack Stevenson, Chuck Reich, and Steve Roberts lined out three hits each.

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 15, Islander Restaurant , 4

Tom Purtell was five-for-five, including a home run and knocked in three runs in support of the Bank. Keith Stought, Tony Kochevar, Manny Miyar rapped three hits each, with Miyar driving in four runs and Kochevar two. World War II vet Mark Nahabehian drove in two runs. Islander’s Nick Brooks and Butch Monson each had two RBI.

CJ’s on the Bay, 12, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 7

In a team effort, CJ’s knocked off the first-place Mutual of Omaha Bank. Paul Burnett ripped two triples and a single. Teammates Dan Standard, Fred Kramer, Leroy Fishleigh and Ray Zielinski, who had a triple, drove in two runs apiece for CJ’s. Ed Brack had another multi-hit game for the Bank with three hits, including a triple.

Joey’s Pizza, 9, Islander Restaurant, 8

Tom Patterson’s flare to left field was the difference in the game, driving in the tying and winning runs with the bases loaded. Lee Dilk chased two runs across the plate on two hits, one a triple, while Dan O’Sullivan crushed a two run homer for Joey’s. George Kirk and Bernie Berman had two hits and two RBI each for the Islander.

ADKOS, 17, Crazy Flamingo, 14

ADKOS scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a come-from-behind win. Barry Bates, the Ontario Canada import, had four hits and four RBI. Paul Vorwich chipped in with four hits, including two triples and three RBI. Bill Dauch, and Ed Kopecky had three RBI, with Kopecky and Stan Sutphen banging triples. Mike Gardner and Joe Kruse stroked three hits apiece for ADKOS. Bill Kayhart had three hits and three RBI for Flamingo. Team members Jim White and Bill Diamond slapped out four hits, with White having two RBI. Jim Conway had three hits and two RBI.

Sand Bar, 8-3, Cheers and Bertram’s, 7-4, Rookies , 6-5, Nacho Mama’s, 3-8, DaVinci’s, 2-9.

Marco division standings

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 8-3, CJ’s on the Bay and Joey’s Pizza, 7-4, Islander Restaurant, 5-6, ADKOS, 4-7, Crazy Flamingo, 2-9.
