Small plane goes down off New Smyrna Beach

— The U.S. Coast Guard and the Volusia County Sheriff's Office were responding to reports of a small plane crash in the ocean off New Smyrna Beach.

The Coast Guard says they received a report Wednesday evening that a fixed-wing, single-engine aircraft was seen spiraling toward the sea approximately 150-yards from the beach.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says preliminary information indicates that two people were aboard the plane, which was flying from Sarasota to Daytona Beach.

Two boats and a helicopter were responding, but no wreckage or victims were immediately found.
