Marco Senior Softball League Commissioner
Sand Bar opened up a two-game lead over Cheers in the Island Division and Mutual of Omaha Bank holds on to a one-game lead CJ’s on the Bay and Joey’s Pizza in the Marco Division.
Here are the game results in order of play.
ISLAND DIVISION
Cheers, 23, Rookies, 9
A 13-run third inning sunk Rookies after they had opened up a 7-1 lead early. Errors and walks were the demise for Rookies. Craig Cunningham and Jim Williams blasted home runs, with Cunningham having four RBI and Williams three for Cheers. Ron Engels, Doug Smith, and Butch Courson drove in two runs apiece, with Al Cenicola collecting three hits. Rookies Steve Sayre had four hits and four RBI and Ray Kane three hits and two RBI.
DaVinci’s, 11, Bertram Total Joint Centers, 4
Pitcher Bill Kaschube kept the power-hitting bats of Bertram’s in check, except for a colossal home run, a three-run blast, off the bat of Bill Thompson. Ed Hamill had three of Bertram’s nine hits. DaVinci’s Jerry Engel had a big game with four hits, including a triple, while driving in five runs. John Luegering and Bill Shurina had three hits each, with John DeRosa chasing two runs across the plate.
Sand Bar, 25, Nacho Mama’s, 1
The game was halted due to the mercy 10-run rule after seven innings. Jim George pitched a four-hitter, with Tom Angelo getting two of Nacho’s hits. Tom McCullough and George had six RBI and three hits each for Sand Bar. Jack Mateja drove in four runs, with Ron Peterson and Scott Byers chasing three runs home. Fran Roche rounded out the attack with three hits. Larry Anspach and McCullough had triples and Byers a home run.
Sand Bar, 11, Cheers, 3
Sand Bar knocked off Cheers to open a two-game lead for first place. Tom McCullough accounted for four hits, with Scott Byers and Tom Porter chipping in with three hits each. Jimmy Cuevas, Murph Knapke and Ken Planck had two RBI each in the win. Jim George limited Cheers to eight hits, two each coming from Dave Banghart and Charlie Zimmer. Paul Shelton drove in two of Cheers’ runs.
DaVinci’s, 13, Nacho Mama’s, 9
DaVinci’s broke open a 9-9 game, scoring four runs in the top of the ninth inning. Don Schwartz delivered the key blow, a two-run triple, giving him three hits. Steve Hummel rocketed a three-run homer, while John Luegering and Ray Niemeyer drove in two runs each, helping DaVinci’s rally from an early 6-0 deficit. John Cavanagh had four hits, Bob Levasseur, Grady Fuller, and Glass had three hits each for Nacho’s. Vic Fondacaro and Fuller had two RBI.
Rookies, 15, Bertram’s, 10
Rookies Rich Krumholz continued terrorizing opposition pitching with five base hits, including a triple and knocking in five runs. Steve Sayre rapped out four hits and Mike Behr three, both driving in two runs. George Schnorr added to the run total with three RBI. Ed Kingsbury and Herman Griffith launched solo home runs for Bertram’s. Kingsbury had three hits, while Ed Hamill and Jerry Cnudde collected two RBI each in the loss.
Joey’s Pizza, 11, ADKOS, 10
Joey’s scratched out a win, scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. Tom Whitlock had four RBI, three coming on a home run. Jim Dorey and Jack Stevenson had two RBI, with Stevenson stroking three hits. Chuck Reich and Tom Patterson each had a triple for Joey’s. ADKOS Paul Vorwich drove in three runs and Joe Kruse two on a home run.
CJ’s on the Bay, 16, Islander Restaurant, 13
Paul Burnett’s three-run homer in the top of the seventh proved to be the difference. Don Rooksbury had a grand slam home run and Jim Walsh a two-run shot for CJ’s. Dan Standard collected three RBI, while Fred Kramer recorded three hits. Islander’s had Dick Corley and Tony Meilan driving in three runs, while Nick Brooks and Bill Himsel drove in two, Brooks’ coming on a home run. John Gill and Jack Evans stroked out three hits.
Mutual of Omaha Bank, 17, Crazy Flamingo, 14
Manny Miyar pounded out four hits, resulting in seven runs being driven in for Mutual of Omaha. Teammates Dick DeAnna had three hits and Ed Brack two RBI. Leon Schmitt lined four hits for Flamingo, with Joe Furst, Jim White and Bill Kayhart having three hits with Kayhart slamming triple. White and Kayhart drove in three runs and Bill Diamond two.
ADKOS, 11, CJ’s on the Bay, 10
ADKOS kept chipping away at CJ’s early lead, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the last inning on Barry Bates laser shot to center field. Bates had three hits and two RBI, with Paul Vorwich driving in three runs on two hits. Chuck Wilson pounded out four hits, collecting two RBI for CJ’s, while teammate George Kirk had three hits and a RBI
Crazy Flamingo, 6, Joey’s Pizza, 3
The Crazy Bird beat Joey’s for the second consecutive game. Pitcher Joe Furst kept Joey’s hitters off stride most of the game. Bill Diamond, Jim White, Tony Brock, and Fred Toxopeas had two hits each, with Leon Schmitt chasing two runs home for Flamingo. Jim Dorey had two hits, including a triple for Joey’s.
Islander Restaurant, 5, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 4
Islander entered the bottom of seventh trailing by a run, when Tony Meilan’s base hit tied the game and Bill Himsel’s drive up the middle scored the winning run. Bill Voss, Mike Walsh and Himsel all had two hits for Islander and Ed Brack two hits for the Mutual of Omaha Bank.
