PHOTO GALLERY: No change in Senior Softball leader board

In a busy softball week, Sand Bar holds its lead atop the Island Division and Mutual of Omaha Bank in the Marco Division of the Marco Senior Softball League.

Here are the results in order of games played.


Bertram’s Total Joint Centers, 12, Nacho Mama’s, 6

Bertram’s opened an early 10-2 lead over an injury-riddled Nacho Mama’s team. Mike Galatis and Ed Hamill had three hits each, with Bill Thompson and Chet Dal Bianco collecting two RBI in the game for Bertram’s. Jack O’Brien had three hits and John Cavanagh two RBI for Nacho’s.

Sand Bar, 14, Rookies, 9

Sand Bar jumped out to an early 6-0 lead that Rookies could not overcome. Larry Anspach was the catalyst for Sand Bar, driving in four runs on three hits, including a triple. John Sherwin had four hits, including two doubles. Jack Mateja, Ron Peterson, and Tom Porter had two RBI each in the win. Lou Wolfenson, Ray Kane and Ralph Leiterding, had three hits each for Rookies, with Wolfenson and Kane driving in three runs each. Kane’s hits included a home run.

Cheers, 22, DaVinci’s, 4

Cheers powered by DaVinci’s, ending the game after eight innings on the mercy rule (more than a 15-run difference). The major blows came from Paul Shelton who hit two home runs, driving in six runs, while amassing five hits. Joining in the assault were Craig Cunningham with five RBI on a triple and home run, and Jim Williams with four RBI and a home run. Winning pitcher Ron Engels had three hits, one a triple, for three RBI. Jerry Engel, John Remhoff and Larry Tuttle had three hits each for DaVinci’s.

Rookies, 14, DaVinci’s, 10

Rich Krumholz, Doug Tuttle, George Schnorr and Ralph Leiterding drilled four hits each, with Krumholz and Ray Kane driving in three runs for Rookies. Kane ended up with three hits while Steve Sayre collected two RBI. Ray Niemeyer, John DeRosa, John Remhoff, and Steve Hummell ripped three hits apiece for DaVinci’s. DeRosa had three RBI, while Niemeyer, Jerry Engel, Jim Green and Don Schwartz had two each.

Cheers, 22, Nacho Mama’s, 7

The Cheers gang struck again, inflicting another 22-run beating in two games. Paul Shelton, Doug Smith, Jim Williams and Butch Courson each delivered four hits, with Dave Banghart, Ron Engels and Craig Cunningham pounded out three. Courson had four RBI, Banghart three, Cunningham, Shelton, Engels, and Smith two each. Cunningham and Courson belted homers and Banghart a triple. Nacho’s Grady Fuller had four hits and two RBI, and Jeff Hultgren three hits and three RBI.

Sand Bar, 14, Bertram’s, 13

In a thrilling come-back win, Tom Porter’s sacrifice drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Bertram’s had opened a 7-1, lead but could not hold off first-place Sand Bar. Jim George, Jimmy Cuevas, Fran Roche, and John Sherwin all stroked three hits. Ron Peterson drove in three runs, with Jack Mateja, Ken Planck and Sherwin having two RBI in the win. Bertram’s John Barrett and Herm Griffith had four hits each and Bill Thompson three, all doubles. Griffith and Thompson collect three RBI, while Ed Kingsbury, Ed Hamill and Barrett two each.


CJ’s on the Bay, 8, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 7

Clutch-hitting Leroy Fishleigh drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, bringing CJ’s back from a 6-0 Bank lead. Fishleigh, Fred Kramer and Jake Jacobson had three hits each and Paul Burnett ripped a triple. Bill Diamond had three RBI and Fishleigh two. Tony Kochevar had four hits to pace the Bank, while Manny Miyar and Mark Nahabedian drove in two runs.

Joey’s Pizza , 9, Islander Restaurant, 6

Tom Whitlock clocked a two-run home run and knocked in four runs in Joey’s win. Bob Kirsinger also recorded three hits. Tony Meilan had four hits and chased two runs home for the Islander Restaurant, as did John Gill, hammering a two run homer.

ADKOS, 9, Crazy Flamingo, 0

Chuck Cornille tossed a shutout and ADKOS scored five runs in the first inning, never looking back. Mike Gardner had three hits, along with timely hitting by Pete Baker and Barry Bates.

Crazy Flamingo, 8, Islander Restaurant, 6

Islander Restaurant scored six runs in the second inning, opening up a 6-0 lead, but were blanked the rest of the game by pitcher Joe Furst. Leon Schmitt of Flamingo’s had three hits and Bill Diamond a double and a triple. Diamond, Tony Brock and Bill Kayhart had two RBI each in the come-back rally. John Gill had three hits for Rookies.

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 17, ADKOS, 5

Scoring five runs in the first set the stage for another win for Mutual of Omaha Bank. Manny Miyar continued his current hot streak with thee hits and six RBI. Buff Morris, who homered in the game, had three RBI, with Dick DeAnna and Al Bozzo collecting two each, Bozo’s coming on a triple. Paul Vorwick had three hits and Joe Kruse and Fuzz Fazekas had two hits each for ADKOS.

CJ’s on the Bay, 10, Joey’s Pizza, 4

Pitcher Dan Callahan had another strong outing. Paul Burnett and Chuck Wilson had three hits apiece, with Gary Schneider clocking a home run. Tom Patterson stroked three hits for Joey’s and Tom Whitlock smacked a home run.

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 11, Joey’s Pizza , 6

The Bank used the long ball to over power Joey’s, with the loss dropping Joey’s to third place. Al Bozzo whacked a three-run homer and Ed Brack a two-run homer, with Tony Kochevar chipping in with two doubles and two RBI. Winning pitcher Jerry Garrett kept Joey’s bats in check except for Tom Whitlock, who had three hits and three RBI.

Crazy Flamingo, 12, CJ’s on the Bay, 9

Winning pitcher Joe Furst, Jim White and Bill Kayhart all had two hits and drove in two runs for Flamingo’s. White, Kayhart and Jim Conway each had a triple. Chuck Wilson had a solo homer and Dan Callahan had a triple for CJ’s. Jake Jacobson drove in three runs and Gary Schneider two in the loss.

ADKOS, 17, Islander Restaurant, 5

ADKOS’ Joe Kruse, Paul Vorwich, and Stan Sutphen each had three hits, with Sutphen recording three RBI and teammates Barry Bates, Darryl Judson, and Ed Kopecky having two each. Judson and Kopecky cracked triples. Nick Brooks, slammed a triple as he and George Kirk had two hits each.
