On a sunny day, with exuberant high school players joining with adults, Island Country Club Foundation had a successful 10th annual Charity Golf Tournament on Sunday.
In a new twist to the outing, 24 student golfers from Collier County high schools were added to teams for fivesomes. Member Terry Mc Creanor explained that the club is very active regarding student participation.
Wes Blackwell, foundation president, said that having the student golfers energized the event.
“Terry DiSciullo, president of the Island Parks and Recreation Foundation, coordinated getting the young golfers,” Blackwell said. “The foursomes enjoyed having the kids, they could really hit a golf ball. It also gave the high school golfers the opportunity to gain recognition that the sport doesn’t get, compared to football.”
Participants also took part in skills competitions, such as putting, driving and chipping.
The team of Wayne Kappauf, Kyle Kappauf, Jim Kauffman, Shad White and high school golfer Anastasia Talalenko won the tournament and special skills competitions.
Second place in team competition went to Kevin Smith, Dick Krumholz, Al Lucchese, Richard Badger and Lely’s Mike Mitchusson.
Third place honors went to Jeremy Mader, Eric and Melissa Dial, Shawn O’Neil and student player Philip Boljanovich.
There were 120 golfers and the total number swelled to 200 at the cocktail awards party where there was a wine tasting, along with a special silent auction.
“It was a super event,” Blackwell said.
Both foundations will share in the proceeds that Blackwell expected to be in the $55,000 to $60,000 range.
The Island Parks and Recreation Foundation will use its share toward funds needed for a community center at Mackle Park. The Island Club Foundation will use the funds for a number of local charities in the Marco area, Blackwell said.
