Marco Island's Red Rooster opens bright and early every day

Special to the Eagle

The Red Rooster Breakfast & Lunch opened as softly as a rooster can crow at 7 a.m. Thursday with old friends and former customers lined up at the door.

The Red Rooster, located in Shops of Marco, 1821 San Marco Road, is the newest jewel in Hoot and Anne Rudolph’s restaurant crown.

Not to worry about Zsa Zsa’s which opened several months ago. Anne related that “ Zsa Zsa’s is my baby and a very special and successful deli but it’s primarily a take-out thing and we wanted to expand into a full service food operation open seven days a week that served breakfast and lunch,” she said, noting that she had no intention of closing Zsa Zsa’s.

Location, location, location, everything in place from the previous occupants and no impact fees made it a great opportunity to be back in the restaurant business again, explained Hoot.

The Red Rooster’s interior has been remodeled into a sparkling white-painted contemporary country eatery with a flock of roosters strutting along the soft green border atop the ceiling molding. Blond wood tables and padded chairs provide seating for 49 diners and outdoor seating is planned down the line.

The Red Rooster offers a separate breakfast menu that is served all day, while the lunch menu begins at 11 a.m. until closing at 2 p.m., which may be extended to 2:30 p.m., said Hoot.

“We’ll play it by ear to start. I’ll be cooking in the kitchen with approximately a total of seven people employed to give us ample help for the front and back of the house,” he added.

Although the menu is still a work in progress, said Anne, nevertheless, the breakfast menu reads like a five-star production with every classic eggs your way, French toast, Benedicts and omelettes accounted for. The specialties section boasts “The Tara,” a parfait of grits layered with crumbled bacon, shredded cheddar and topped with poached egg, as well as a Santa Fe Huevos.

For the faint of heart there’s a veggie egg white scramble with asparagus, spinach tomatoes and scallions. What’s not to like?

The prices are reasonable. The breakfast menu starts at $4.25 for one egg-plus and slides up to $10.95 for crab cake Benedict.

The lunch menu tries to outdo breakfast but it’s a close call with a warm Brie salad consisting of fresh spinach topped with candied pecans, red onions, chopped bacon, apple slices and toasted Brie topped with balsamic dressing, that’s keeping company with an East End salad delight and four more equally tasty creations. The sandwiches selections and the four wraps ain’t too shabby either, and don’t forget the mouth-watering eight-ounce burgers.

Hold the water — the beverage list is all anyone could wish for, including fresh squeezed orange juice and hot chocolate.

She is pleasant but Hoot is one of the most rebarbative characters I have met in my years on the island....

I love the Red Rooster. When ever I visit my son in VA in the Reston area, we always go to Red Rooster. Welcome to Marco Island.
