Imperial Parkway speed limit to be discussed at Bonita Springs City Council

It could soon be legal to go faster on Imperial Parkway.

On Wednesday, Bonita Springs City Council will discuss raising the speed limit from 35 mph To 45 mph on Imperial Parkway between East Terry Street to Dean Street.

McMahon Transportation Engineers and Planners conducted a study that showed drivers heading northbound had an average peed of 46.7 and southbound, 49.9 mph.

By measuring the speed of vehicles at various points along the roadway, traffic engineers are able to use data to determine a reasonable and safe maximum speed to post for all vehicles, City Manager Gary Price said.

Though this speed limit is recommended by McMahon and staff concurred, Councilman Bill Lonkart doesn't agree.

“People should have gotten tickets, they were going 20 mph over the posted limit,” he said. “Now, with the speed limit at 45, people will go up to 50, 51 mph, and that's not safe. I'm okay with it at 35 mph, I'm on that road a lot.”
