NAPLES — It was smokin’ at the Collier County Fairgrounds on Saturday for the first annual Ziggy Dick’s BBQ Cook-Off & Festival. The Rotary Club of Naples Bay hosted the event to raise money for its missions.
“Barbecue’s a fun thing, it makes everybody happy,” said event organizer Roger Dick.
Forty-one teams competed for $15,000 in prizes in the categories of chicken, ribs, pork and beef brisket. The food entries were judged for things like appearance, texture and flavor, said Dick.
“This is just like the golf scene,” said Dick. “It’s another sport.”
Lamar Marshall traveled from Columbus, Ohio, with his 30 years of barbecue experience ready to cook for the masses. He said he brought approximately 500 pounds each of pork and beef brisket and 1,000 pounds of ribs.
“We serve no swine before it’s time,” Marshall joked.
Organizers said more than one thousand people have already attended the two-day event, which runs until 10 p.m. Saturday.
