The Marco Men’s Senior Softball League opened its season with many competitive games. Here are the first week results, except for Friday’s games.
Rookies, 14, Cheers, 5
Rookies rocked Cheers behind the hitting of Pete Oellich who was 4-for-4 in the game and the power hitting of teammates Fran Diotte and Ralph Leiterding. Diotte had three RBI on a double and triple, with Leiterding launching a two-run home run. Cheers’ Dave Coward had two hits and two RBI, with Paul Shelton stroking a triple.
Bertram Orthopedics, 13, DaVinci’s, 11
Bertram’s and DaVinci’s slugged it out with Bertram’s, taking the lead for good on a three-run ninth-inning rally. Ed Kingsbury, who had three hits and two RBI, drove in the tying run in the ninth with John Barrett and Rich Schiller providing insurance runs. Bertram’s Mike Hopkins had three hits and Ed Hamill two hits and three RBI. Ray Niemeyer had two hits and three RBI for DaVinci’s. Jim Green who made a number of key fielding plays had three hits, while driving in two runs, as did Bill Shurina.
Sand Bar, 12, Nacho Mama’s, 9
Sand Bar stroked 22 hits leading to the win. Larry Anspach was 5-for-5, one being a solo homer, and two RBI. Winning pitcher Jim George helped his cause with four hits and an RBI. Joe Cervelli had a two-run homer and three RBI, while Kenny Planck collected two hits and two RBI. Nacho’s Bill James had four hits and four RBI, and Tom Angelo and Bob Levasseur had three hits apiece with Angelo driving in two runs and Levasseur one.
Cheers, 11, Sand Bar, 10
Cheers held off a ninth inning-rally by Sand for the win. Dave Banghart and Paul Shelton led the Cheers hitting with three hits each, with Banghart ripping two doubles. Craig Cunningham and Charlie Zimmer had two hits each, including a double. Jim George and Jim Cuevas had three hits each for Sand Bar, with Joe Cervelli, Tom McCullough, and Ken Planck with two hits. One of McCullough’s hits was a triple.
Nacho Mama’s, 23, DaVinci’s, 6
Nacho’s ended up pummeling DaVinci’s in what was a close game through the first three innings. Jeff Hultgren was the sledge hammer with five RBI on four hits, which included a home run and triple. Dan Cody also banged out four hits, good for two RBI, and Bill DiNeno contributed three hits and two RBI. John Barrett had four RBI with three coming on a bases-loaded double. Jerry Engel had three hits for DaVinci’s with Larry Tuttle driving in two runs on a double.
Rookies, 13, Bertram’s, 10
Rookies remained undefeated, scoring six runs in the top of ninth inning. Winning pitcher Lou Wolfenson had three hits and an RBI. Teammates Doug Tuttle and Ray Kane drove in three runs each, with Tuttle having tree hits and Kane two. Jack Evans had two hits and two RBI. Bertram’s Herman Griffith, Ed Hamill and Rich Schiller had three hits each. Chet Dal Bianco and Roger Fleming each drove in two runs on two hits each.
Joey’s Pizza, 11, ADKOS, 7
Joey’s broke open a tie ball game in the top of the seventh inning, scoring five runs. Tom Patterson had three hits, good for two RBI for Joey’s. Winning pitcher Bob Zinkevicz and Jack Stevenson had two RBI. Charles Reich cracked a solo home run and a triple. ADKOS’ Mike Garner had three hits and drove in one run, while Frank Dooley collected two hits and two RBI. Peter Baker cracked a triple in the loss.
CJ’s on the Bay, 14, Islander Restaurant, 5
CJ’s cruised to an easy win over the Islander Restaurant. Don Rooksbury led the assault with four base hits, with Chuck Wilson and Dan Standard having three hits each. Leroy Fishleigh had two hits and three RBI. The Islander’s John Gill, Butch Monson, and Nick Brooks knocked out three hits each.
Mutual of Omaha Bank, 3, Crazy Flamingo’s, 2
In a pitcher’s duel, Jerry Garrett bested Roger Wise. The difference in the game was a fourth-inning triple by Ed Brack of the Bank, who had two hits in the game, being driven in for the winning run by a Tony Kochevar base hit. Bob Kirsinger and Al Bozzo had two hits each, with Kirsinger getting two RBI. Tony Brock and George Zwerver had two hits apiece with Zwerver having one RBI for Crazy’s.
Islander Restaurant, 10, Crazy Flamingo’s, 9
The Islander Restaurant scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a come-from-behind win. Winning pitcher Butch Monson drove in the tying run and Jim Adams, the winning run. Nick Brooks and Dick Corley had two hits each in the win. Roger Wise and Joe Furst had three hits and two RBI apiece for Crazy Flamingo’s.
Joey’s Pizza, 13, Islander Restaurant, 4
Joey’s Pizza was led by Jim Dorey, Chuck Reich, John Ranier and Tom Whitlock knocking out three hits each and Whitlock driving in three runs. With the win Joey’s remains undefeated at 2-0. Chuch Wilson had three hits for CJ’s, including two doubles.
