Three-way tie in Senior Island Division

Sand Bar, Rookies and Cheers top the Island Division, while Mutual of Omaha Bank is undefeated in the Marco Division of the Marco Island Senior Men’s Softball League.

Here are recent results.

ISLAND DIVISION

Rookies, 7, DaVinci’s, 5

Rookies remained undefeated at 3-0, while DaVinci’s remained winless at 0-3. Rich Krumholz continued his torrid hitting with three hits for Rookies. Doug Tuttle and Nick Brooks had two RBI. Tony Meilan made a number of key defensive plays in the outfield, preserving the win for pitcher Lou Wolfenson. DaVinci’s Jerry Engel had three hits and two RBI, with Ray Niemeyer and Don Schwartz each getting two hits.

Cheers, 23, Nacho Mama’s, 21

Cheers opened up a 15-3 lead over Nacho Mama’s through three innings. Nacho’s never quit, but came up two runs short. Winning pitcher Ron Engels helped his cause with three hits and seven RBI. Dave Banghart and Denny Lello had four hits, and Dick DeAnna three for Cheers. Banghart, Craig Cunningham, Dave Coward, Dan Dumbauld and Al Cenicola all had two RBI. Nacho’s Bob Levasseur had four hits, with Bill DiNeno and Graydon Fuller had three hits each. Fuller had five RBI; Jack O’Brien, Bill James and Jeff Hultgren had three RBI each in the loss.

Sandbar, 17, Bertram Orthopedics, 16

Sand Bar rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to take the game into extra innings. Tom McCullough drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. Joe Cervelli had a big day with four hits and six RBI for Sand Bar. Murph Knapke had three hits; Tom Porter drove in three runs, with Ken Planck and John Sherwin with two RBI each. Bertram’s Mike Hopkins and Chet Dal Bianco had four hits apiece, with Hopkins collecting four RBI and Dal Bianco two. Teammates John Barrett, Dom Fiorda, Ed Hammill and Mike Galatis each had three hits, with Hammill collecting three RBI.

Nacho Mama’s, 14, Bertram Orthopedics, 13

An errant throw in the bottom of the eighth inning, allowing two unearned runs to score, which was the difference in the game in a seesaw battle between Nacho’s and Bertram’s. Jeff Hultgren who had four RBI for Nacho’s, whacked a three-run homer and John Cavanagh had a triple, good for two RBI. Vic Fondacaro drove in three runs on two hits for winning pitcher Jack O’Brien. John Barrett and Mike Hopkins each had three hits for Bertram’s. Ed Kingsbury had four RBI and Herman Griffith three RBI as Bertram’s lost its second consecutive game by one run.

Sand Bar, 19, Rookies, 6

Tom McCullough, Jim Cuevas, Joe Cervelli and Larry Anspach knocked in fours runs each for Sand Bar. Anspach had four hits, with Cervelli and Cuevas having three hits, one of Cuevas being a bases loaded triple. Winning pitcher Jim George had two RBI on a home run. Rookies Doug Tuttle and Lou Wolfenson each drove in two runs. Mike Behr and Pete Oellrich had two hits each.

Cheers, 14, DaVinci’s, 9

Cheers used the long ball to open an 11-1 lead on the way to handing DaVinci’s it fourth loss of the season. Tom Purtell had a grand slam home run and Craig Cunningham a three-run shot. Dan Dumbauld had three hits. Winning pitcher Engels and Paul Shelton each drove in two runs. Jim Green had three hits for DaVinci’s, Bill Shurina drove in four runs and Jerry Engel two runs. Ray Niemeyer had a triple as DaVinci’s remains winless.

MARCO DIVISION

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 7, CJ’s on the Bay, 3

Ed Brack drove in four runs for the Bank on a double and triple, keeping the Bank undefeated. Winning pitcher Jerry Garrett and Bob Kirsinger recorded two hits each with Garrett having an RBI. Garrett limited CJ’s to seven hits, two each by Chuck Wilson and Gary Schneider.

Islander Restaurant, 13, Joey’s Pizza, 8

Islander’s jumped on Joey’s early in the game scoring 11 runs in the first three innings. Jack Evans had three RBI and Dick Corley two RBI to pace the Islander Restaurant. Mike Walsh had three hits, while Bill Himsel and Corley had two hits apiece. Joey’s hit into three double plays in the game, offsetting a three-hit game from Jack Stevenson, and two hits each for Jim Dorey, Chuck Reich, Lee Dilk, Bill Moors and Gary Grant. One of Grant’s hits was a triple. Dory and Reich had two RBI.

ADKOS, 16, Crazy Flamingo, 10

Mike Gardner, Joe Kruse and Paul Warwick all cracked a home run for ADKOS. Gardner, who had three hits, also had a triple and three RBI, while Kruse collected four RBI. Fuzz Fazekas and had three hits and two RBI; Bill Dauch three hits with Dauch and Tom Francese drove in two runs in the win. Jim Conway had three hits, including a home run, good for three RBI for Crazy’s. Tony Brock, Roger Wise, Bill Kayhart, Leon Schmidt, and Jim Monnier had two hits each in the loss.

ISLAND DIVISION STANDINGS:

Sand Bar, Rookies and Cheers, 3-1, Nacho Mama’s, 2-2, Bertram Total Joint Centers, 1-3 and DaVinci’s.

MARCO DIVISION STANDINGS:

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 3-0, Joey’s Pizza and Islander Restaurant, 2-1, ADKOS and, CJ’s on the Bay, 1-2, Crazy Flamingo, 0-3.
