A reported purse snatching late Tuesday in a parking lot in Fort Myers Beach resulted in a high-speed pursuit and ultimately a head-on crash in South Fort Myers.
Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating the circumstances that lead to the incidents, said John Sheehan, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman.
According to Sheriff’s Office reports:
Deputies were called at 10:10 p.m. to a road rage incident between two cars in the area of Winkler Road and Summerlin Boulevard but could not find the cars.
About five minutes later they were sent to the 6700 block of Winkler Road where a head-on crash occurred between a 2005 Toyota Camry and a 1999 Volkswagen Cabriolet. The caller reported the occupants of the cars were fighting.
After separating the people, deputies learned the road rage incident was related to a strong-armed robbery that occurred in a parking lot in the 1100 block of Estero Boulevard in Fort Myers Beach. The victim, whose name was not clear in the reports, said her purse taken.
All those involved “then engaged in a high speed chase around the Fort Myers area until finally stopping when they crashed at 6777 Winkler (Road).”
The Toyota was driven by Alexis Marie Ceacer, 18, of the 13000 block of Heather Ridge Loop, Fort Myers. The Volkswagen was Alex Rodriguez, 28, of the 1000 block of Casino Avenue, Lehigh Acres.
Both cars had passengers: In the Toyota, Scott Danser, 30, of Keene, N.H., and Autumn Bennett, 26, of the 1100 block of 7th Road, Fort Myers; In the Volkswagen, John Stella, 16, of the 6500 block of Highland Pines Circle, Fort Myers, and Austin Mauzy, 20, of the 5200 block of Glenlivet Road, Fort Myers.
Deputies could not determine who was at fault in the crash. Injuries that occurred were caused by a fight. Sheehan said one person was taken to the hospital.
An estimated $1,000 in damages was reported to a car port post at Myerlee Country Club off Winkler.
The incident report about the strong-armed robbery was not immediately available Wednesday.
The investigation continues.
