Senior Softball games not all runaways

After an active week of games, Sand Bar tops the Island Division with a 5-1 record, with a one-game lead over Cheers.

Mutual of Omaha Bank remains undefeated at 6-0, with a two-game lead over Joey’s Pizza and Islander Restaurant in the Marco Division.


Sand Bar, 23, DaVinci’s, 16

Sand Bar hammered out 40 hits in the win. Winning pitcher Jim George had four hits and five RBI, including a triple. Joe Cervelli and Tom Porter added four hits each. Cervelli drove in four runs and Porter two. Jimmy Cuevas, Tom McCullough, John Sherwin and Fran Roche had three hits each, with Roche drilling a home run. Larry Anspach, who had a triple, drove in three runs. DaVinci’s had 24 four hits, with Steve Hummel, Ray Niemeyer, John Remhoff and Larry Tuttle all having three hits. Tuttle knocked in three runs.

Bertram Orthopedics, 16, Cheers, 15

After losing the last two games by one run, Bertram’s rallied for six runs in the bottom of the ninth when Chet Dal Bianco drove in the winning run. Hot-hitting Mike Hopkins, Bill Thompson and Ed Kingsbury all had three hits. Thompson drove in three runs, with Hopkins and Kingsbury driving in two each. Cheers’ Paul Shelton had three hits, while Craig Cunningham and Ron Engels drove in three runs. Cunningham smashed another homer and was walked three times.

Nacho Mama’s, 11, Rookies, 10

In another come-from-behind game, Nacho’s rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth, with the key blow coming from winning pitcher Jack O’Brien after Mike Puskar tied the game on two-RBI single. Puskar ended up with three RBI as did Vic Fondacaro who had three hits. Mike Behr, Doug Tuttle and Fran Diotte had three hits each for Rookies, with Diotte smashing a triple. Ray Kane belted a three-run homer and Ralph Leiterding drove in three runs.

Cheers, 13, Rookies, 6

Cheers’ Paul Shelton racked up five hits, including a triple, and two RBI. Jim Williams had three hits, including a triple. Denny Lello also had a triple and drove in four runs. Craig Cunningham stroked two hits, good for three RBI. Rookies’ Rich Krumholz continued punishing opposing pitching with three hits and Ray Kane drove in three runs in the loss.

Bertram Orthopedics, 7, DaVinci’s, 4

Bertram’s turned four double plays in the game to preserve the win for pitcher Jerry Cnudde, even though DaVinci’s had five players with two hits each. Dom Fiorda and Bill Thompson each drove in two runs, with Ed Hamill blistering three hits and a RBI. Jim Green accounted for two of DaVinci’s runs on two hits.

Sand Bar, 11, Nacho Mama’s, 9

Nacho’s fell to Sand Bar behind the hitting of Jim Cuevas, Larry Anspach, and John Sherwin. Cuevas and Sherwin had three hits each, with Anspach and Sherwin driving in two runs. Tom Angelo and Jack O’Brien collect three RBI for Nacho Mama’s, with Angelo having four hits and O’Brien two hits, both triples.


Mutual of Omaha Bank, 9, Joey’s Pizza, 8

Behind the hitting of Manny Miyar, who had three hits and three RBI, the Bank remained undefeated. Bob Kirsinger and Tony Kochevar had two hits each. Mark Nahabedian (86 years young) had a key base hit, driving in two runs. Steve Roberts and Charles Reich had two hits each for Joey’s, with Jim Dorey collecting two RBI.

Crazy Flamingo, 6, CJ’s on the Bay 5

Flamingo’s edged out CJ’s for the team’s first win of the season. Tony Brock and Larry Laird were the catalyst in the win with three hits each. Jim White and Jim Conway each had two hits. Paul Burnett, Dan Standard and Fred Kramer had two hits each for CJ’s. Dan Callahan and Kramer drove in two runs apiece.

Islander Restaurant, 11, ADKOS, 7

Nick Brooks lashed out three hits, including a double and triple, resulting in two RBI, matched by two RBI from Mike Walsh. Winning pitcher Butch Monson had a two-run homer. Fuzz Fazekas clocked a three-run homer for ADKOS, with Darryl Judson stroking three hits.

CJ’s on the Bay, 11, ADKOS, 1

CJ’s knocked off ADKOS behind the stellar pitching of Dan Callahan. Leroy Fishleigh had three hits, with Chuck Wilson and Paul Burnett cracking home runs. ADKOS lone run came from Paul Vorwick.

Joey’s Pizza, 24, Crazy Flamingo, 3

Joey’s routed Flamingo’s. Jim Dorey hit for the cycle (single, double, triple, home run), driving in five runs. Dan O’Sullivan and Steve Roberts each had three hits and each hammered home runs, while O’Sullivan had six RBI and Roberts two. Tom Patterson and Jack Stevenson had four hits, with two of Patterson’s being triples. Stevenson and Charles Reich also had a triple. Jim Conway had three hits and Joe Furst three RBI for Flamingo’s.

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 10, Islander Restaurant, 0

In a rain-abbreviated game the Bank poured it on the Islanders. Jerry Garrett’s dominant pitching continued, allowing only two hits. Ed Brack and Tom Purtell supplied the thunder and lighting, both cranking home runs, with Purtell’s being a three-run strike. Brack ended up with three hits and two RBI. Dick DeAnna and Al Bozzo accounted for two hits and two RBI each.

Joey’s Pizza, 8, ADKOS, 7

Joey’s was able to hold off a last-inning rally by ADKOS for the win. Tom Whitlock had three hits for Joey’s and Jim Dorey drove in two runs and Lee Dilk lined a triple. Stan Sutphen had a two-run homer for ADKOS, with Mike Gardner, Jan Grossman and Pete Baker having two hits each. Baker also was credited with two RBI.

Islander Restaurant, 14, CJ’s on the Bay, 1

In an error-prone game, the Islander Restaurant improved its record to 4-2. Tony Meilan and Bill Himsel had two hits each and Mike Walsh and Meilan each drove in two runs. Chuck Wilson and Leroy Fishleigh had two hits for CJ’s, with Fred Kramer driving in the solo run.

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 11, Crazy Flamingo, 3

Ed Brack continues to pound the long ball for Mutual of Omaha Bank with a triple and a home run included in his three hits, good for two RBI. Bob Kirsinger hoisted a two-run homer, while Tony Kochevar drove in two runs. Winning pitcher Jerry Garrett remains undefeated with a record of 6-0. Leon Schmitt had two hits and a RBI for Flamingo’s.
