So maybe the Naples police chief was reaching too far in a tight budget year when he asked for a new boat.
But police radios?
Tom Weschler is asking to beef up some of officers’ most important tools in the field, and he is doing so in the most fiscally responsible manner we can think of.
Rather than asking for all this new gear all at once, he proposes spending $48,000 for each of the next five years.
And yes, we believe each officer should get to keep his or her own radio 24/7 rather than share with others. It’s about access and ownership.
We understand tough fiscal times. We also understand some of the basics of modern policing and the importance of communicating with one another in emergency situations.
The chief is on the right track, and it is important for City Council to tell him so.
