Suspicious envelope at Collier courthouse deemed not hazardous

The Collier County Courthouse was flanked by emergency personnel on Wednesday night after a suspicious envelope was found near the front desk.

However, after about a two-hour investigation, authorities determined the package was not hazardous.

Deputies, along with East Naples Fire, Collier EMS and HAZMAT responders, arrived at the scene shortly after the 7:15 p.m. call, according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office reported that the package was not hazardous shortly after 9 p.m.

East Naples fire spokesman Greg Speers said the package was found in the common area of the first floor, and that it was stapled shut.

"It's an everyday element that you see in Southwest Florida," Speers said when asked to describe the package. "It's hard to imagine what someone was thinking."

Speers said the envelop was unattended and the writing was of poor quality. The courthouse had already been closed at that point in the evening.

The package was still being investigated late Wednesday night.
