EVERGLADES — An early morning fire destroyed two houses and lightly damaged another house on Sunday in Everglades City.
Emergency crews responded to a fully-engulfed house fire at 318 Pleasure Island around 4:30 a.m. Sunday.
Ochopee Fire Chief Alan McLaughlin said it was a two-alarm fire and the department called for additional help. No one was injured in the blaze.
McLaughlin said one of the most difficult part of the blaze was crews having to access the homes by boat. There are 19 wood-frame homes on the island.
Three Ochopee firefighters fought the blaze for more than one hour.
It was an exemplary effort to save the third house, McLaughlin said.
Marco Island Fire and Rescue and East Naples Fire Control and Rescue District assisted in the blaze.
The fire was declared under control around 6:40 a.m. Sunday. Crews remained on scene until 2 p.m. Sunday.
At this time, the State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
The homes are valued at about $250,000 each.
