Tampa police officer shoots man family said was suicidal

TAMPA — Officials say a Tampa police officer shot a man who was reportedly suicidal and pointing his weapon at police.

Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy says 74-year-old Umberto Ferrara's family called police early Tuesday to report that he was depressed and armed.

Officers arriving on the scene reported hearing gunshots before finding Ferrara sitting on a porch, bleeding from a head wound and firing a gun.

McElroy says Officer Dan Evers shot Ferrara when the man pointed a gun at him.

No officers were injured.

Police say Ferrara was hospitalized in serious condition with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and other gunshot wounds. It's unclear how many times Evers fired at Ferrara.
