An 18-year-old Lehigh Acres woman was arrested Monday night after she left a boy, 7, in an unlocked van while she worked out at a local business.
Rickell Carlene Simmons, of the 4500 block of 24th Street Southwest, was charged with child neglect.
According to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office report:
Just after 7 p.m. a deputy was called to a business in the 3100 block of Lee Boulevard about a boy being left alone in a van that was not running. The key was in the “accessory” position, which allowed the boy to listen to a radio.
The deputy did a search on the license plate and had the gym employee page the vehicle owner, who is not Simmons. Soon after a woman got off a piece of workout equipment, walked to the front door and past the deputy. He queried who she was and if she knew the boy. Simmons acknowledged she knew the boy said she was inside the gym for a few minutes.
Simmons had checked into the gym using the name Kelly.
An investigation showed Simmons took the boy’s mother to a local store to shop for about an hour and the boy was to go with her to the gym. Once there, the operator said the boy could not be in the business while Simmons worked out. Simmons told the operator she would take the boy home and return.
The boy’s mother knew the child was going with Simmons while she worked out.
Deputies also discovered Simmons had only a learner’s permit to drive.
