PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Florida man has been convicted of sexually assaulting a relative two decades ago in Rhode Island.
A Superior Court jury in Providence on Wednesday found 38-year-old Daniel Mercedes of Tampa guilty of child molestation and first-degree sexual assault with coercion.
Prosecutors say the crimes occurred between 1991 and 1993, beginning when the victim was 14-years old. They say she came forward years later and told a pastor and her mother about the crimes, before reporting them to police in 2009.
Mercedes is being held without bond until his sentencing, which has not been scheduled.
