— The University of Central Florida Athletics Association has filed a 42-page motion, attacking Circuit Judge Robert M. Evans’ conduct and seeking to reverse a jury’s decision it was negligent in the death of football player Ereck Plancher.

After a three-week trial, an Orange County jury reached a verdict on June 30 stating UCFAA was negligent in the former Lely High School football star’s death and the his parents should be awarded $10 million in damages. The jury did not find UCFAA eligible for punitive damages.

“The verdict is against the manifest weight of the evidence,” the motion filed by insurance company attorneys representing UCFAA stated. “It also is excessive. … UCFAA moves to set aside the verdict.”
