TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Dixie County Attorney Jennifer Ellison says county commissioners will probably take their time deciding whether to appeal a federal judge's decision ordering the removal of a six-ton granite monument of the Ten Commandments in front of the county courthouse in Cross City.
Ellison says she is personally disappointed in the court's action, but noted Tuesday that an official response won't come until commissioners review the decision.
Federal Judge Maurice Paul ordered the monument be removed within 30 days of his July 15 ruling. Dixie County commissioners have two scheduled meetings before the deadline, the first on Thursday and again on Aug. 4. Paul's ruling sided with the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida.
