4-year-old critically injured after being struck by pickup truck

A 4-year-old boy was in critical condition Wednesday after he rode his bicycle in front of a pickup truck in Lehigh Acres. His condition was upgraded to fair on Thursday.

Zander Carman was riding his bicycle in a driveway along 29th Street Southwest when the bike traveled into the path of a Ford F150 truck driven by Jose Luis Ramos, 50, of Fort Myers, according to Florida Highway Patrol reports. Ramos attempted to steer away, but struck the right side of the bicycle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Janitza Ramos, 8, was in the pickup as well. Both Jose and Janitza Ramos were wearing seat belts and neither was injured.

Charges are pending, FHP reports.

The injured boy is hospitalized in Tampa General Hospital, where he is listed in fair condition Thursday afternoon, according to hospital spokeswoman Ellen Fisk.
