Friends say teen bragged about tourist slayings in Sarasota

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say the teen accused of fatally shooting two British tourists in Sarasota in April bragged to friends about the crime.

That's according to records released Tuesday by police. Friends of 16-year-old Shawn Tyson told investigators that he found the men stumbling drunk through his housing project and shot them when they didn't have money.

Authorities say 25-year-old James Cooper and 24-year-old James Kouzaris were killed at about 3 a.m. April 16 after a night of drinking in Main Street bars. Tyson has been identified by witnesses as one of the males running from the scene of the shooting.

Police think they know the man who was with Tyson during the robbery, but do not have enough evidence to charge him. That suspect remains in jail on an unrelated probation violation.
