We hear the term from time to time mentioned in Collier County. It is a reference to promoting our area’s medical care in conjunction with its resort, “come and stay awhile” atmosphere.
The idea, to put it even more clearly, is to woo patients to come here for treatment and relax in luxury while they recover and get follow-up care.
A story in this newspaper the other day pointed out that our area is not alone. A story from the Sarasota Herald Tribune noted that medical tourism is a booming industry in that area. One firm, Florida Med-Retreat, was featured as a one-stop shop for tourism/surgery packages, especially for foreigners.
It goes to show that as our area works at economic diversity and new business opportunities, we ought to be aware that other places are in the same game and possibly out in front.
There is hard work to do. Are we up to the challenge?
