Editorial: Edgerrin James, Immokalee football training camp

Crossroads abounded on Monday.

As youth from Collier County and from Tampa to Miami streamed into Immokalee for a football training camp, Edgerrin James was there to steer them in the right direction. For the third summer in a row, James, who starred at Immokalee High School, the University of Miami and the National Football League, shared his expertise.

The running back was showing how to give back.

And, on this particular day, after a year away from the NFL, though still in shape, he was announcing his retirement from the game -- as NFL players and owners appeared on the verge of a deal on a contract that would permit the 2011-12 season to get under way.

That would take place at training camps with much, much beefier clients than the 1,000 or so kids and teens who James was expecting to host in Immokalee.

The best of the NFL was front and center on Monday. Businessmen and athletes teamed up in board rooms, and a star with a big heart showed the way for others who will follow.
