FORT MYERS BEACH — The Help Us Help Them Joplin Fundraiser was held at Nervous Nellie’s on Fort Myers Beach on Saturday, June 4. The Eberle family, who now resides in Fort Myers, hails from Joplin, Mo., and visited their many family members there after the tornados.
“Our relatives said, ‘well it was worse before you got here,’” said Margo.
They arrived four days after the disaster. Jeff Eberle’s brother was in Green Briar Nursing Home, where there were 11 fatalities. His brother survived, but the family searched the ruins for his girlfriend.
“We spent all night looking for her – she didn’t make it,” said Margo.
What many just saw of Joplin’s tragedy on their televisions, the Eberle’s saw firsthand.
“The key to the whole thing was the amount of people that came to help,” said Jeff. He added that it makes you “really have faith in humanity.”
Raffles and prizes were auctioned off to raise money for the American Red Cross to benefit those affected by the catastrophe.
Sanibel Harbour Resort and Spa, Key West Excursions, artist Darryl Pottorf, Princess Cruises, Pinchers Crab Shack, Norris Home Furnishings, Walmart, Scanlon Lexus and High Soaring Inc. were just a few of the many sponsors of the event. For more information on how to contribute, call (239) 645-9955.
