Prep basketball: SFABC All-Star Games on Monday, Collier County games March 16

NAPLES — Already selected to play in the South Florida Association of Basketball Coaches all-star game, Community School's Kent Coyne and Immokalee's Jernell Hughes will be hoping for an even bigger honor during Monday's game at Bishop Verot.

Coyne and Hughes, among seven Collier County players who'll compete in the boys game, are finalists for the SFABC's Mr. Basketball award. The honor is given to the top player in the organization's Collier, Lee and Charlotte county area.

The SFABC will name a Mr. Basketball and Ms. Basketball at the boys and girls senior all-star games. Bishop Verot's Nate Howard, Fort Myers' Evin Graham and Charlotte's D.J. Scott also are finalists for the boys award. The girls game starts at 6 p.m., while the boys are set to tip off at 8.

On March 16 at St. John Neumann, Collier County will have its own all-star contest. The game will give 56 senior players -- 31 boys and 25 girls -- a chance to play in one last game before ending their careers.

Coyne would be the second straight Community School player to win the award. Mitch Woods, now a freshman at Appalachian State, was last year's area Mr. Basketball.

The boys game mixes 24 all stars from Southwest Florida on two teams. Some players who were teammates during the season will go head to head during the game.

Meanwhile, the girls' game is divided into North and South teams. The South team consists of 11 players from Collier County and one from Estero.

In the Collier County all-star games, all 11 high schools will be represented. The teams are divided into North and South. Immokalee's Brien Crowder will coach the boys North team, while Lely's Ryan Bowen will coach the South. On the girls side, Gulf Coast's Mark Woodruff will coach the North, and Lely's Kirsti Jones will coach the South.

The girls start at 5:30 p.m., the boys start at 7.
