Local tennis column: Area pros at Wyndemere for event Tuesday through Thursday

— Local tennis professionals will tote their talents to the Wyndemere Country Club for a special event Tuesday through Thursday.

The annual Wyndemere Challenge is a on tap and pro players will include Ido Abougzir (Naples Bay Resort), Jorge Falla (Naples), Chris Fletcher (The Legends), Seth Fogelman (Pelican Isle), Tyler Manring (Barron Collier), Franco Mata and Joe Obidiegwu ( Port Royal), Tye Myers (Dunes), Nester Nunez (Ritz-Carlton), Jose Pastrello (Naples), Carlos Perez (Venezuela), Sal Procacci (Vineyards), Bryan Twente (Fiddler’s Creek), Todd Watkins (Collier’s Reserve), Jicham Zattini (Miami) and Kevin Long (Wyndemere).

Play Make-a-Wish: The Naples Grande Beach Resort will host the Make-a-Wish Open benefit tennis tournament Saturday, March 26, from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $50 for Naples Grande members and $60 for non-members. Lunch and snacks are to be included. The format will be a round-robin in A,B and C divisions. Prizes will be awarded for first through fourth place in each division.

Proceeds of the tournament will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help make dreams come true for seriously ill children. For registration, call 594-6033. All players are required to register and pay prior to the event. The entry deadline is 6 p.m. Thursday, March 24.

League meetings scheduled: USTA Collier, Region 7, will conduct the spring leagues captains meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hodges University, Rooms 210/211. The meeting is for the Adult and Senior Combo Leagues, Adult and Adult Mixed Leagues, Adult and Senior Tri Level Leagues and Flex Singles. It is important that all captains attend this meeting in order to become familiar with the new National and Section regulations for this 2011 league year. Bonita Bay special set: A noteworthy array of tennis pros are in Southwest Florida to raise money for the Pediatric Cancer Fund at The Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida. The event is Friday and Saturday at Bonita Bay. Don Johnson, No. 1 doubles player in the world, and 1988 Olympic Silver Medalist Tim Mayotte are among the 17 pros who will take part in the fourth annual Bonita Bay Celebrity Tennis Event. Presented by FineMark National Bank & Trust, play will benefit Barbara's Friends -- the cancer fund at The Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida.

Tickets for $75 each are still available for the Pro Marquis Challenge today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Bonita Bay Club Tennis Center. The event, sponsored by Bob and Bev Grappone, will feature two doubles matches with commentary by well-known tennis personality Fred Stolle.

Juniors to invade Cambier: The Arthur L. Allen Tennis Center at Cambier Park will host the Spring Tropical Junior Super Series tournament March 12-14. This USTA-sanctioned event will have boys and girls from throughout Florida competing in singles and doubles in 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s. The entry fee is $43 per person (includes doubles). JusTennis play continues: The USPTA/JusTennis Junior Tennis Series continues March 12 at the East Naples Community Park. The registration deadline for the singles event is Thursday, March 10. For more, contact Collier County Parks tennis pro Spike Gonzales at 248-0894.

Flex League gears up: Registration for the Collier 2011 Spring Flex League/Singles is now open. Matches will begin the week of March 28. Singles, doubles and mixed will be offered in the Summer Flex session. USTA members can register at their appropriate NTRP level of play. Non-USTA members use the rating guidelines found on the ustaflex website. The fee is $25 for USTA members and $35 for non-members.
