— All but ensured a historic victory Saturday at the Eagle Invitational, the Lely girls track team wanted to end the meet with an exclamation point.

The Trojans did just that, coasting to victory in the final event, the 4x400-meter relay. It was the perfect end to the day for Lely, which won the meet for the first time in school history.

Lely finished the 47th annual Eagle Invitational with 88 points, easily outpacing runner-up and host Naples High with 64.5. The Trojans did it with a total team effort, scoring points in 14 of the 15 girls varsity events. They had four victories and finished in the top six 13 times.

“We all came together as a team,” said Eliana Albert, one of three Lely senior captains. “We all picked up each other's slack. If someone was off, we came together to help.”

Even more dominant than the Trojans girls were the Naples boys. In their home meet, the Golden Eagles won five times and scored in all 15 events on their way to a huge victory.

Naples finished the boys meet with 104 points. Golden Gate was the closest competitor with 62 points in second place, followed by Immokalee (55.5) in third.

For the Lely girls, Andrene Dume and Liciane St. Jean each were on three winning relays. All the events in the Eagle Invitational were scored as team events, with the total of three athletes making up the field events in addition to the nine relay events.

Dume, a senior captain, and St. Jean teamed up on the long jump and sprint medley victories. Dume was on the winning 4x400 team, while St. Jean contributed to the triple jump trio that took first. Both also were on the second-place 4x100 team.

“This feels really good,” Dume said. “We've been going after the school record (in the 4x400), so we've been working really hard. These are all relays, so it's a total team effort. The whole team has to work together.”

Lely's winning time of 4:10.39 in the 4x400 was only about a third of a second off the school record (4:10.05), which the relay team set last year.

While Naples finished in the top five of all boys events but one, the Eagles particularly excelled in the distance races.

Naples won the 4x800 and 4x1,600 relays, the distance medley relay, and the 3,200, which was scored by adding up the places of each school's three runners. The Eagles also won the shuttle hurdle relay.

Jaquan Betancourt, Buddy Gates, Jovanie Martinez and Thomas Swingley each were on two winning relay teams. Martinez was the individual winner of the 3,200.

“Distance is a strong point, and we work really hard at it,” Martinez said. “We're pretty well-rounded, and our distance is going to be up there for us.”

Gates, Martinez and Swingley were on the Golden Eagles' cross country team that finished 11th at the Class 3A state finals in the fall.

The runner-up Golden Gate boys were led to three victories in the field events by two-time defending state high jump champion Jarvis Davis. The senior led the Titans to wins in the high jump, the long jump and the triple jump.
