This year’s Hideaway Beach Club Tennis Tournament was an open event, with 24 of the 64 players coming from other locations.

The tournament featured players from Hideaway, Marco YMCA, Fiddler’s Creek, Lely Player’s Club & Spa, Eagle Creek, Cape Marco, South Seas and Hammock Bay.

Long-time winners Monson Douglas and Art Cole, and winners of numerous USTA adult titles, played outstanding tennis to win the men’s 3.5 division.

In the women’s 3.5 division, the second-seeded team of Kay Camplese and Jackie Sawicki stormed back from one set down to beat one of the better teams in the county, Debbie Shade and Sherry Van Stone, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7.

In the women’s 3.0 division, Betty Hayes and Cindy Wizenreid dominated the field as they won all of their matches in straight sets, beating a tough Fiddler’s team of Kathy Gulling and Kay Lawton to capture the championship.

Finally, in the men’s 3.0 category, it was an all Hideaway Beach final with Bob Hayes and Steve Mattingly coming back from 5-7 down to win 6-3 and 10-7 in the deciding tie break.

We had exceptional weather and a great volunteer staff to stage a first-class event that is coming back in 2012.
