Games this week end the regular season, with both divisions up for grabs.
Sand Bar and Cheers, who are tied for first in the Island Division, play at 10 a.m. today (Friday). Mutual of Omaha Bank and CJ’s on the Bay, played on Thursday after news deadline, with the Bank holding a one game lead for the Marco Division title. Playoffs begin on Monday.
Here are game results as of March 8, with game results in order of day played.
Bertram’s Total Joint Centers, 12, Nacho Mama’s, 7
The game was tied through four innings 6-6, before Bertram’s scored six runs in the fifth for the win. Bill Thompson lashed out four hits, good for two RBI. Ed Kingsbury chipped in with three hits, while Ed Hamill and Rich Schiller each chased three runs across home for Bertram’s. John Cavanagh had four hits and Tom Angelo three, with both driving in two runs for Nacho Mama’s.
Sand Bar , 7, Rookies, 2
Sand Bar broke open a 3-2 ball game, scoring three runs in the seventh to remain in first place. Jim George, Jack Mateja and Larry Anspach zapped out three hits. George had a triple and Scot Byers a home run. Byers and Jimmy Cuevas had two RBI for Sand Bar.
Cheers, 17, DaVinci’s, 4
Cheers pounced on DaVinci’s with Charlie Zimmer and Paul Shelton doing the major damage with five RBI apiece. Craig Cunningham and Doug Smith chipped in with three RBI each. Zimmer and Cunningham cracked home runs and Shelton drilled two doubles. John DeRosa had two RBI for DaVinci’s.
Rookies, 14, DaVinci’s, 8
Rookies drew eight walks and added some timely hitting in win over DaVinci’s. DaVinci’s rallied to tie the score at 8-8 on a John DeRosa three run-homer. However, Rich Krumholz then smashed a grand slam home run to put the game out of reach. Doug Tuttle had three hits for Rookies.
Cheers, 21, Nacho Mama’s, 7
Dave Banghart banged two home runs as part of his three hits, giving him seven RBI in the game. Craig Cunningham and Paul Shelton each drove in four runs, with Cunningham blasting a home run and Shelton a triple. Winning pitcher Ron Engels and Dave Coward added three RBI apiece with Denny Lello lashing out three hits for Cheers. Grady Fuller had four hits and Jack O’Brien and Bill Dineno had three hits each for Nacho’s.
Sand Bar, 18, Bertram’s, 5
Sand Bar romped over Bertram’s with Larry Anspach driving in five runs, Murph Knapke four and Tom McCullough three, with Jack Mateja and Scott Byers having two. Knapke and McCullough each laced four hits with one of Knapke’s being a home run. Anspach, Byers and Fran Roche each had three hits, with Roche ripping a triple. Winning pitcher Jim George limited Bertram’s to nine hits.
CJ’s on the Bay, 3, ADKOS, 2
In one of the best played games of the season, pitcher Dan Callahan of CJ’s won over Ed Kopecky of ADKOS. The game went into extra innings with ADKOS taking the lead in the top of the eighth, only to see CJ’s score the tying run, driven in by Dan Stanard, and the winning run by Fred Kramer.
Joey’s Pizza, 15, Crazy Flamingo, 7
Scoring six runs in the first inning, Joey’s Pizza never looked backed. Tom Whitlock drove in four runs on three hits, one a home run. Chuck Reich and Dan O’Sullivan had two RBI. Jack Stevenson ripped four hits, with Fred Carlson and O’Sullivan having three each for Joey’s. Bill Diamond riveted three hits for Flamingo with Joe Furst driving in two runs.
Mutual of Omaha Bank, 11, Islander Restaurant, 3
Ed Brock clocked a grand slam home run for the Bank and it was all over for Islander. Manny Miyar and Keith Stought accounted for two RBI, with Miyar drilling three hits in support of winning pitcher Jerry Garrett. Nick Brooks had three hits and a RBI for Islander Restaurant.
Mutual of Omaha Bank, 8, Joey’s Pizza, 5
Power ball was the name of the game and the difference between winning and losing. The Bank’s Ed Brack blasted two home runs, one a two-run shot and the other a three-run shot, giving him five RBI. Joey’s Chuck Reich countered with a grand slam. Jerry Garrett the Bank’s winning pitcher, kept Joey’s bats in check with the exception of Reich, allowing only five hits.
Crazy Flamingo, 9, CJ’s on the Bay, 5
Joe Furst, Bill Diamond, and Bob Kirsinger all drove in two runs as the Crazy Bird put a damper on CJ’s need of a win. Kirsinger smacked four hits and Leon Schmitt three. Paul Burnett had two RBI for CJ’s.
Islander Restaurant, 19, ADKOS, 12
The ball was flying off the bats of both teams. The Islander mustered a six-run inning in the fifth to put the game away. Bill Voss drove in four runs, Mike Walsh three, while Nick Brooks, Bill Himsel and Chuck Reich each had two for the Islander. Himsel smashed a home run and Brooks a triple. ADKOS’ Paul Vorwich drove in four runs and Barry Bates three. Vorwich, Bates and Pete Baker all had three hits. Vorwich and Mike Gardner slammed triples.
CJ’s on the Bay, 3, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 1
CJ’s got themselves back in the hunt for first place when they downed the Bank. Dan Callahan limited the Bank to one run and only seven hits; the solo run coming on a triple by Bill Moors who scored on a fielder choice play in the second. CJ’s came back in the third, scoring all three runs; tying run on a hit by Fred Kramer, the go ahead run on a hit by Dan Stanard and a insurance run on a hit by Jake Jacobson. Paul Burnett had three hits for CJ’s and Bob Kirsinger three for the Bank.
Islander Restaurant, 7, Joey’s Pizza, 6
Islander Restaurant edged out Joey’s Pizza by scoring five runs in the top of sixth inning. Joey’s responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but came up on the short side of the ledger. Mike Walsh had three hits for Islander. Butch Monson and Bob Zinkevwicz of Joey’s both pitched a great game.
Crazy Flamingo, 20, ADKOS, 18
Down by a score of 13-5, the Flamingo team came storming back, scoring 11 runs in the fourth to gain the lead 16-14 and were able to hold off ADKOS. Leon Schmitt, Joe Furst, Jim White, Bill Kayhart, and Tony Brock all lined three hits in the game for the Crazy Bird. Schmitt, Kayhart and Furst had three RBI. Kayhart launched a two-run homer and Furst a triple. Joe Kruse and John Ranieri stroked our four hits each and Paul Vorwich, Pete Baker and Barry Bates had three each for ADKOS. Mike Gardner garnered four RBI, three on a home run. Vorwick had a two-run homer and Bates a solo shot. Ed Kopecky and Vorwich also had triples for AKDOS.
