Outstanding games fill Senior League playoff bill

The season-ending tournaments for both divisions in the Marco Senior Softball League have begun, with some outstanding games already played.

ISLAND DIVISION; TOURNAMENT GAMES

Cheers, 13, Rookies, 4

Cheers’ Charlie Zimmer and winning pitcher Ron Engels, both cracked triples. Teammates Dave Banghart, Craig Cunningham and Denny Lello each had three hits. Engels and Lello drove home three runs, with Cunningham and Jim Williams driving home two. Butch Coursen made two spectacular defensive plays, shutting the door on any thoughts of a Rookies rally. Ray Kane had two RBI for Rookies.

Sand Bar, 15, Bertram Total Joint Centers, 7

The game was 4-3 in favor of Bertram’s before Sand Bar scored three runs in the fourth to take the lead for good. Murph Knapke had a big game for Sand Bar with three hits, including a triple, giving him four RBI in the game. Fran Roche had three RBI, Larry Anspac had a triple and, Jack Mateja, and Scott Byers chased two runs across the plate. Ed Kingsbury and Bill Thompson had three RBI in the game for Bertram’s. Kingsbury was robbed of a two run home run on a catch by Tom McCullough in the first inning.

Rookies, 7, Nacho Mama’s, 5

Rookies eliminated Nacho Mama’s as Rich Krumholz banged out four hits, with Doug Smith, Pete Oellrich and Doug Tuttle each having three. Smith and Ray Kane drove in two runs in the win for Rookies. Winning pitcher Dan Callahan scattered 10 hits. Grady Fuller had two RBI for Nacho Mama’s.

Bertram’s, 11, DaVinci’s, 9

DaVinci’s jumped out to an early lead only to see Bertram’s score five runs in the fourth. DaVinci’s fought back, tying the game at 9-9 in the top of the eighth only to have Bertram’s score two in the bottom of the eighth for the win. Bill Thompson rapped out three hits for Bertram’s, with Herm Griffith and Ed Hamill each driving in two runs. Ray Niemeyer, Jerry Engel, and Jim Green each stroked three hits for DaVinci’s. Engels, Green, Bill Shurina and Steve Hummel each had two RBI.

Sand Bar, 11, Cheers, 2

Jim George scattered eight base hits as the winning pitcher and the offensive catalyst with four hits, driving in two runs. Teammate Scott Byers had three hits, with Jimmy Cuevas, Jack Mateja and Murph Knapke chasing two runs each across the plate.

Rookies, 12, Bertram’s, 5

Pete Oellrich had four hits, including a triple, resulting in five RBI, leading to Bertram’s elimination from the tournament. Rookies Rich Krumholz, Doug Smith and winning pitcher Lou Wolfenson laced three hits each, while Doug Tuttle drove home two runs on a triple. Ed Kingsbury ended his season with Bertram’s, lining three base hits.

MARCO DIVISION; TOURNAMENT GAMES

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 10, ADKOS, 7

ADKOS was holding on to a 5-3 lead when Bill Moors doubled with the bases loaded, leading to a seven-run inning in the bottom of the sixth for the Bank. Tom Purtell had two RBI and Ed Brack smacked a solo home run in the win. Leon Schmitt had three RBI for ADKOS, with Pete Baker drilling three hits.

CJ’s on the Bay, 12, Joey’s Pizza, 8

Irish eyes were smiling for Danny Boy Callahan, the winning pitcher for CJ’s on the Bay and Danny O’Sullivan of Joey’s Pizza as both had three hits in the game. Fred Kramer of Joey’s also stroked three hits. Callahan, Ray Zielinski (Irish via being a Notre Dame Alumni), and Gary Schneider had two RBI for CJ’s. Tom Whitlock blasted a two-run home run and Chuck Reich had a two-RBI triple for Joey’s.

Crazy Flamingo’s, 15, ADKOS, 10

The season came to end for ADKOS. Tony Brock played a major role in ADKOS exit, with three hits, including a home run and three RBI. Winning pitcher Joe Furst had three hits and Ray Zielinski contribute three RBI. Zielinski and Dan Standard cracked triples. Mike “The Monster” Gardner continued destroying the ball with three hits, including a triple and home run for ADKOS. Teammates Paul Vorwich and Stan Sutphen each drove home two runs.

Joey’s Pizza, 6, Islander Restaurant, 3

Joey’s Pizza ended Islander Restaurant’s season when they scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to overcome a 3-2 deficit. Pitcher Bob Zinkevicz got off to a shaky start, allowing three runs in the first two innings, but shut the Islander’s down for the balance of the game, allowing only nine hits. Jim Dorey had three hits for Joey’s and drove home one of the four runs in the sixth. Lee Dilk and Dan O’Sullivan had two RBI in the game, with both getting one in the sixth.

CJ’s on the Bay, 12, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 4

In a rematch of the two teams that battled it out for the Division League Championship, CJ’s on the Bay handed the league champions the Bank its first loss of the tournament and advanced to the tournament championship game, played after the news deadline. Dan Callahan, CJ’s, pitcher had another strong outing, scattering nine hits. Al Bozzo drove in two of the Bank’s four runs. Chuck Wilson, who drilled a triple, had two RBI. Fred Kramer, Ray Zielinski, and Gary Schneider also had two RBI each for CJ’s.

Crazy Flamingo, 17, Joey’s Pizza, 6

Crazy Flamingo flipped Joey’s Pizza out of the tournament. Jim White drove home four runs and Bill Kayhart, who smacked a triple, had three RBI, leading Flamingo’s attack. Winning pitcher Joe Furst and Chuck Wilson each had three hits, with Furst blasting a home run. Joey’s Gary Grant had three RBI and Dan O’Sullivan collected two RBI.
