The latest entry in the world of ladies handbags, the Miche Bag, billed as “One Bag Endless Possibilities” has found its way to Southwest Florida.

You are at a party and a glass of wine spills onto your favorite purse. Instead of panicking and thinking your purse is now trash, just remove the bag’s outer shell and replace it with an entirely different (and clean) pattern for a new look.

That same scenario played out in 2004 when Michelle Romero soiled her purse.

“She cut out the damaged piece of fabric and replaced it with new fabric. The idea blossomed into creating a bag with changeable covers that could act as a new ‘outer shell’ ... and the Miche Bag was born,” explained Deborah Lambert, area sales representative and Marco Island third-grade teacher.

Lambert explained that while visiting family in Kansas, last spring, she saw the Miche Bag line at a boutique and purchased a bag and a few outer shells.

“I had never seen anything like the purses anywhere and thought it was an incredible concept that would be great for Southwest Florida purse lovers. Since I love color and like to coordinate my bags and outfits, the bags were a natural choice for me,” she said.

After returning home, she contacted the company, based in Utah, and learned the bags were marketed as a home-based business. “I contacted the local franchisee and expressed my interest in becoming a distributor,” she explained, and last June Lambert and her daughter, Hannah, 22, joined as a mother-daughter team.

The customer chooses a “base bag,” available in three sizes — large, classic and mini — and as many outer shells as she wishes to buy. The Miche Bag line is offered in a wide variety of color palettes and patterns for each season.

“The mini bag was designed for little girls to match their mother’s purses; however, they are selling to women who use it as a chic evening bag,” said Lambert, of the product line.

The Miche Bag bundle ($99) has three quality purses. A bundle includes one classic-size base bag with a choice of three interchangeable shells. Another option, the large bundle, includes one large base bag with one large interchangeable shell for $75.

Other choices include a soft wallet, a clutch wallet, the Mini, as well as a diaper bag with a wipeable surface, outside pockets and changing pad that can also double as a roomy beach bag.

Interchangeable and adjustable handles, in chain or knotted styles are also available and easily replace standard handles.

Especially practical for traveling, you can take one base bag and pack several shells that flatten for easy packing and are great for finishing several different outfits.

“I can put my classic size Miche into my large size Miche Bag, with all my carry-on items. Using the extra length from the chain style handles, I can then walk with ease and still carry another large shopping bag or tote in the other hand without assistance,” said Lambert.

She even carried an oblong insulated cooler inside her large Miche Bag, and still looked fashionable.

Lambert said that her business success stems from a simple recipe.

“Do all things with the upmost integrity, persevere when things get tough, always keep a positive attitude and outlook, and have fun,” she said.

Lambert has a background in women’s accessories, as she operated a laminate purse venture with her sister 15 years ago.

“We have always been drawn to things with ‘girlie’ prints. I knew back then that someday my own daughter, Hannah, and I would have a home-based business; we just needed to find the perfect item to market, and the Miche Bag is it,” said Lambert.

Currently, Lambert has a large selection of shells on sale.

Orders are accepted by phone or email, and Lambert will go to a customer’s home for viewings. Customers may also opt to host a show where they can earn a base bag and shell.
