Lawmakers rescue Fla. students needing federal aid

A memorial that provides the federal government a list of 31 private Florida colleges and universities eligible for federal student aid passed the Florida House on Tuesday.

Last fall, the U.S. Department of Education adopted a new regulation that all independent colleges and universities in the country had to recertify with the federal government. Until they did so, students of those schools would be ineligible for federal financial aid.

The memorial was sponsored by Rep. Matt Hudson, R-Naples.

“This memorial sends that certified list back to Congress so that come fall, students will actually be able to get federal financial aid,” Hudson said. “Otherwise they would have been cut off.”

The memorial already passed through the Florida Senate, and will now be filed with the Secretary of State before being sent to Congress.
