In a year when eight new championship banners were won, it was understandable that choosing the top student-athletes would be a challenge at Marco Island Charter Middle School.
Athletic Director Roger Raymond went on about all the athletes before naming Christy Thorstenson and Tanner Fulcher on Thursday night in the Charter School gym.
Thorstenson was on 15 teams during her three years at the Charter School. She was chosen all conference in cross country three straight years and contributed to eight Sunshine Athletic Conference championships. She was a member of the only team in school history to win a Collier County championship, which the Lady Eagles did in cross county.
Fulcher played on 13 teams during his Charter School career. He too was all conference and was on a three-time cross country championship team. Earlier, he was named the top student-athlete in cross country and volleyball.
The Michael “Mickey” Mandel Award, given to the student athletes who played supporting roles to make their teams better, went to Morgan Burke and Gage Wheeler.
In a rarity, particularly when the girls teams were so strong with many eighth graders, sixth grader Rosie Poling won the track & field award. In a season of fantastic fetes, she won Collier County championships the 3200 and 800 meter runs and was second in the 1600.
Jen Carter, Thorstenson and Poling were the top three runners in most cross country meets. It led Raymond to choose Carter and Thorstenson to share the award
Anthony Macchiarolo was a double winner in soccer and golf.
