MARCO ISLAND — On a postcard day, 354 competitors attacked the Gulf, the roadways and the sandy beach in the inaugural Marco Island Triathlon Fitness Challenge on Sunday.
Diego Corredor, 31, of Cape Coral and Kasey Carroll, 41, of Parish, were the top male and female runners.
Corredor won in a time of 1:09:05, Carroll’s winning time was 1:14:44.
Corredor’s son, Santiago, 14, made it a family winning affair, topping the 13-15-age category in 1:19:14.
"When I came out of the water, my son was close behind, coming out third," Diego Corredor said. Corredor may have gained a slight edge in the water, but it was the bike competition that gained him a huge lead, then he romped home in the 3.1-mile run on the beach to victory.
Corredor runs 15 triathlons a year, and does half iron man events. "It was a beautiful race (in the Marco hill section) and there we no potholes in the biking competition," he said.
Carroll came to the race to get back into the feel of running since her brother Bob died in June.
"Normally, we would have competed together in the Siesta Key Triathlon (which was Sunday), but I wasn’t ready for the emotional aspect I thought that event would bring," she said. "But I did want to start back, and this was a great competition."
At the triathlon’s start, there was a cool and whipping wind that made the water choppy in the swimming portion.
"Where’s Miss Dottie when you need her?" Marco's Jim Prange jokingly said of Dottie Weiner, the legendary swimming teacher at the Greater Marco Family YMCA.
