Location of shooting
BONITA SPRINGS — Lee County sheriff’s detectives continue investigating an early morning shooting in Bonita Springs.
However, few details of the shooting — including the victim’s name — have been released.
A man was shot on Brink Circle, near the intersection of U.S. 41 and Bonita Beach Road, between 2 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Stephanie Eller said.
The victim was hospitalized, she said, but she did not know where he was taken. Eller said the victim was alive and not suffering from life-threatening injuries.
Detectives are calling the shooting a “specific” and “isolated” incident, Eller said, and do not believe there is a wider public safety concern. Eller said the victim has a criminal history.
There were no marked patrol cars on Brink Circle on Thursday evening as some residents returned from work.
No arrests had been made by Thursday evening.
Detectives released few details about the shooting, which they said is still an active investigation.
The name of victim and the circumstances of the shooting have not been released.
“This is one of those unique investigations,” said Eller, who added that releasing any more information could compromise the investigation and the safety of the victim.
According to Florida Statute, the department can claim “criminal investigative information” as a reason not to release information to the public. However, statute states “the name, sex, age and address” of the victim are not exempt unless it is a sexual offense or child abuse case.
Eller said the Sheriff’s office only has to give the information in a “reasonable” amount of time, and statute is not clear on what’s reasonable.
More information could be available Friday, Eller said.
Residents on Brink Circle were silent on what happened too.
Some residents said they did not hear the shooting, while others simply declined comment.
