Let’s imagine, if you will, that we are back in the 18th century in Smalltown, U.S.A. You are standing on a street corner and you hear the cry of a town crier ringing a hand bell while yelling, “Here ye, there is a town hall meeting this evening.”
Town hall meetings actually date back to the 17th century in early America where everybody in a town community would gather to learn about shared subjects of interest. So we fast forward to today, to Collier County Public Schools, and to the modern-day series of six town hall meetings soon to be conducted by your new superintendent, Dr. Kamela Patton.
She invites you to join her at a location convenient for you as she discusses student achievement; Standards-Based Progress Reports, which should be of interest to elementary school parents; and new graduation requirements, which should be on the radar of parents of our high school students. She’ll provide you with a testing update so you know what’s going on with testing in our schools these days.
Patton will also share information about recent enhancements to science instruction in our school district. She will tell you why it is so important to read with your young children, while giving you a heads up about the “Be There” campaign will are about to launch, the campaign intended to inspire you to be there for your children as you live each day.
If you aren’t already plugged in using our parent access tools, you will learn how to sign up (and be given the chance to sign up on the spot) to view your child’s school assignments (all grade levels) and how to view the current grades of your middle and high school student. And you’ll learn more about the district’s two primary communication vehicles: our award-winning website (www.collierschools.com) and “Your Window to Education,” the Education Channel, Comcast cable 99, which you’ll also find streamed online on the web at www.collierschools.com.
The six superintendent town hall meetings are being held across the county over the next eight weeks:
• Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Everglades City School (415 School Drive)
• Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Golden Gate High School (2925 Titan Way)
• Thursday, Nov. 3, at Lely High School (1 Lely High School Boulevard)
• Monday, Nov. 14, at Gulf Coast High School (7878 Shark Way)
• Thursday, Nov. 17, at Immokalee High School (701 Immokalee Drive)
• Monday, Nov. 28, at Tommie Barfield Elementary School (101 Kirkwood Street)
Your questions for Dr. Patton will be welcomed at each meeting, but you may submit your question in advance if you’d like. Just send it to firstname.lastname@example.org, or click on the “Ask the Superintendent” home page icon (www.collierschools.com). And be sure to let us know which meeting you’ll be attending. We hope to see you at a town hall meeting near you!
