The last of the Summer Swing Tennis events was hosted by the Marco Island Racquet center, with 36 players. Taking part were players from the Marco Island Racquet Center, YMCA, Island Country Club and Hideaway Beach Country club in the last of this highly successful and enjoyable series of events.
Players started the day with a continental breakfast and moved on to the center’s city’s newly-reconditioned courts for a day of tennis. Each player participated in two nine-game sets, accumulating points per games won. The top 12 players from the 3.0 and 3.5 ranking advanced to a third set. Players were matched up with players from different clubs, according to their USTA ranking to participate in a “social tennis tournament.” The main focus was not so much on winning as it was on having a good time and getting to know other tennis players on the island.
While competition was not the emphasis of the day, there were winners declared.
In the 3.0 classification Jennifer Bonifitto took first place and Ray Gauch took second.
In the 3.5 classification Mel Daly and Mike Kanan tied and split the first and second-place prizes.
