19-year-old surfer bitten by shark off Florida beach

The Florida teen has more than 25 teeth marks on his leg

CRESCENT BEACH, Fla. — Authorities say a 19-year-old surfer was bitten by shark at Crescent Beach.

Shane Lancaster told the St. Augustine Record he felt something bump into his leg while surfing Wednesday morning at the north Florida beach. When he emerged from the water, his left leg was covered in blood.

St. Johns County Marine Rescue officials cleaned and bandaged the wounds.

Lancaster told the newspaper the shark left 22 teeth marks on the bottom of his leg and six on top. Lancaster says the wounds required stitches.

George Burgess, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research at the Florida Museum of Natural History, says Lancaster was likely bitten by either a blacktip or spinner shark. Those are the two most commonly associated with shark attacks in Florida.
