In a very intense match the Marco Eagles girls volleyball team fell to St. Ann in season openers for both teams.
Playing at home, the Lady Eagles fans cheered every point. In all three games each team had huge rallies, but neither team folded under pressure.
In the first game the Lady Eagles jumped out to a 5-1 lead, only to see St. Ann rally, leading much of the game. But the Lady Eagles stormed back, as close as 23-21 before St. Ann scored twice to close out the game, 25-21.
In the second game, St. Ann ran off 10 points to take an 18-7 lead. Again the Lady Eagles held tough, winning 12 of the next 13 points to tie the game at 19. Up 24 -22, the Lady Eagles faltered, with St. Ann tying the game at 24. The gritty Lady Eagles then rallied for the win, 26-24.
In the deciding game, St. Ann jumped out to an 11-3 lead and this time finished off the Lady Eagles, 15-7. The tiebreak game in a match is played to 15, not 25 like other games.
“I was very proud of our effort, going against an experienced team with some club players and a club coach,” Charter coach Amber Prange said. “We were very competitive.”
Prange said Katie Moss, Areetha Chaudhry, Shannon O’Regan and Becca Gates had outstanding games.
In the sixth grade match, St. Ann won, 2-1 in games.
