If you ever feel there’s just nothing to do, read on. The City of Marco Island Parks and Recreation Dept. has made a concerted effort to see that no one on the island ever lacks for activities.

Parks and Rec just put out their fall schedule of programs, and there is something for everyone. Youths, teens, adults, fitness buffs, card sharks, runners and lovers of fresh produce all have events geared for them. This autumn, said Mindy Matusiak, recreation program supervisor, special attention is being given to community-wide events and programs for adults.

“We want to give the kids a chance to get back into the swing of school,” she said. “We’re still offering a number of kids’ activities, but we are specializing in special events this fall. We want to get the community involved with the parks.”

One such event, the Jolley Be Good 5K race in November, will take advantage of the new span of the Judge J.J. Jolley Bridge. Scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 19, the race will coincide with the dedication of the expanded bridge, and a one-mile fun walk around Veterans’ Community Park. That park will itself be dedicated one week earlier, on Friday, Nov. 11.

The Halloween Spooktacular will beat Halloween itself by nine days, arriving on Saturday, Oct. 22, and the Marco Island Farmers’ Market will return for another season each Wednesday from November through April. All special events are free to all. Below is a complete listing of the Parks & Rec programs.

I commend the Marco Island Parks and Rec department for all these wonderful events.

To all the readers of this article can you imagine how many more events could be run and revenues earned when a new Community Center is built. More and more programs, generate more revenues. Also, "if you build it, they will come." Time for the Council to make a decision that is good for the Island - build a new safe, state of the art Community Center at Mackle Park!!!!!

Yes, I agree. There are so many great places on Marco for the tourists. Why not make the Island and it's tourist tax base ( after all commercial development took most of the beaches and little is left of old Florida ambiance ) at least pay for a top-of-the-line community center. You folks that are afraid to pony up another 5 bucks a year in taxes simply don't understand that the value of life of the community is worth the cost of one value meal at Mcdonald's.
