Perspectives different for Lely golf coaches

The Lely golf coaches take different perspectives when it comes to their teams.

Boys coach Daniel Johnson has 10 on his roster, while Kevin Smith struggled to get four.

Johnson has all but one starter back. Smith has but one starter back and three new to golf.

“Our season is going into full swing and there is no chance of us laying up,” Johnson said. “With my team we are firing at the pin, no matter what obstacles and not having second thoughts,” the ever exuberant Johnson says.

With junior captain Samantha Camposano the only golfer breaking 50 for nine holes, Smith says, “sophomore Denise Molina and freshmen Jordan Rice and Juiliana Falato, had never been on a golf course until their first match, but have a strong desire to learn and improve.”

Juniors Brandon Black and Tom Zeleznik, along with freshman Kevin Rusetto shot 42s, while senior Joe Marinaro shot 43 in their recent win over Immokalee, making them 2-2 for the season. The girls are 0-1.

While Johnson is coordinator for this year’s Class 2A-District 15 tournament site, Smith was mentioning that he still needs clubs for his beginners.

The boys practice and have home matches at Lely Mustang Golf Club at Lely Resort. The girls also use Lely, Hammock Bay, High Biscus and Riviera golf clubs.

The end result for both is to be able to compete and have fun.
