On a spectacular night for softball, the City Adult softball tournament semifinals took place at Winterberry Park.
The first game featured the No. 2 seed Cocomo’s against the No. 3 3 seed Joey’s Pizza. Cocomo’s bats came out flat and Joey’s was hot as Joey’s jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings. But Cocomo’s, as it has done so many times, ground its way back. Behind hits from Eddie Kirst, Kevin Hennings, Marc Canady Mike Watkins, Rich Bush and Scott Gibbs, they were able to take the lead after five innings, 8-6.
Joey’s Santo Gentile started the sixth inning off with a base hit to left field and with hits from Tony Oliverio, Justin Hanna, Zach Lutkemeyer and Steve Pahr, Joey’s took back the lead at 10-8. Cocomo’s got within one run, but Joey’s added another run in the top of the seventh to make it 11-9. Cocomo’s sent their top hitters to the plate in the last inning, but a double play ended the game, and moved Joey’s into the championship game on Thursday night.
The second game saw undefeated NeNe’s Kitchen against DaVinci’s. NeNe’s kept on rolling, winning 15-8.
DaVinci’s, playing shorthanded due to illnesses among many of their players, was no match for NeNe’s powerful lineup. NeNe’s has been powerful at the plate and solid in the field and on the mound. Strikeouts are not common in softball, but Neil Alberry, behind his pitching mask, had DaVinci’s mesmerized as he posted 3 Ks. Bobby Natalie’s three hits, including a home run, led NeNe’s at the plate, as Eric Nagel, Wes Alberry, Brad Frazier, Lee Vanderjagt and JP Nachef all had two hits each. Mike Radlovacki led DaVinci’s with three hits and Mike Poteet, Ray Neil, Andrew Vale and Taylor Goldsmith all added two hits each in the defeat.
The championship game will start at 7:05 p.m. at Winterberry Park on Thursday.
Remember, Marco Island Parks and Recreation Department is trying to form a co-ed softball league.
Games would be on Thursday nights, beginning April 19 and ending June 7. Team fee is be $375 for an eight-game season.
