A 51-year-old Sarasota man is accused of breaking into a Catholic thrift store, stealing money from a donation box and spraying the office with a fire extinguisher before his departure.
The break-in was reported March 27 at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store at 3164 Davis Blvd., after someone noticed a donation box had been vandalized in a nearby alleyway, according to an incident report.
After entering the store's broken glass front door, Collier County sheriff's deputies found an axe inside the office next to a safe that had been covered in wood stainer and shredder oil. A fine, white powder from a fire extinguisher covered the room, and a chainsaw was plugged into an outlet, reports said.
Reports said the burglar got away with a bag of gold jewelry and cash, but left behind identifying personal items and blood that was sampled by crime scene investigators.
John Boynton Davis, of Sarasota, was arrested Thursday on a warrant in connection with the break-in. He is facing charges of burglary, grand theft and criminal mischief at a place of worship.
