Naples' Trevor Moore and teammate Erik Storck couldn't carry over the momentum of a race win on Tuesday into Wednesday's 49er sailing competition in the Olympics at Weymouth, England.
The two actually moved up in the overall standings -- from ninth to seventh -- but it could've been better.
Moore and Storck had won the fourth race of the competition Tuesday, and were ninth overall. Wednesday, the two finished seventh in the fifth race overall -- the first of the day -- 45 seconds behind winners Emmanuel Dyen and Stephane Christidis of France. That moved them up to fourth overall.
But Moore and Storck struggled in the second race of the day, placing 13th, 1:35 behind Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen of Australia. That dropped them back to seventh overall, where they were after the first day of competition Monday.
The two Americans hope to be in the top 10 that qualify for the medal race on Aug. 8. There are two races Thursday, and three Friday. Teams are off Saturday, then finish the competition with two races Sunday and Monday.
After the 15 races, points from the worst race are thrown out, and the remaining points are added together. Teams get one point for a win, two points for finishing second, etc. The top 10 advance to the medal race on Aug. 8. In the medal race, points are doubled, with the winning team getting two points, the second-place team four points, etc. The team with the lowest number of points wins the gold medal.
Races start at 7 a.m. ET.
